PUNTA CANA. The death toll in the La Victoria prison fire has risen to 11. Work to remove debris continues.
The general director of the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services reported that work is being done on the identification of the bodies.
Yesterday it was said that the fire was due to a short circuit. It is suspected that the incident began in the patio, in cells 3 and 4 of the prison.
At the time of the incident, there were 7,588 inmates or prisoners in the facility. The prison was built for 1,200 inmates.
The La Victoria prison has been built for 72 years. It has an overpopulation of more than 500%.
Since yesterday, hundreds of people have been in the area of the damaged prison. They are trying to find out about the fate of their relatives imprisoned in the aforementioned place.
