Punta Cana. The initial Latin American Councilor Summit 2024 commenced in Punta Cana yesterday. It is a significant event for the region, hosting over 500 councilors and local leaders from 33 countries.
The Dominican Association of Vocals (ADOVA), the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), the Dominican Federation of Municipal Districts (FEDODIM) and the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Municipalist Associations (FLACMA) organized this event. The aim is to enhance municipal governance and develop a shared agenda to manage urban challenges in the region.
Notable political and municipal personalities participated in the opening ceremony. These include Manuel Tejeda Calderón, Branny Arias, Víctor D'Aza Tineo, Pedro Richardson, Kelvin Cruz, Jorge Dulón Fernández, Sergio Arredondo Olvera, Elías Matos, Lioncito José, and Wagner Báez. All were present to support the summit’s objectives and emphasize strengthening local administrations across Latin America.
The summit, active until November 2, focuses on five main areas vital for municipal development. These include empowering local legislative bodies, progressing sustainable urban development, taking climate action, using innovation in public management, and fostering global cooperation. These subjects are touched upon in conferences, panels, and work tables. Thus, equipping councilors with handy tools and alliances needed for enhancing the management of cities in Latin America, and improving the residents’ quality of life.
A Final Declaration will be signed at the event’s conclusion. This document will frame resultant commitments and shared visions for the future of Latin American cities. This pact underlines the councilors’ dedication to creating communities that are sustainable and inclusive, with sturdy, transparent, and resilient municipal leadership.
