PUNTA CANA – LA ALTAGRACIA PROVINCE – Building a country’s vision is essential for tourism. This includes shaping macroeconomic policies and schemes that encourage a stable economy, attract investments and inspire confidence in investors.
David Collado, the Minister of Tourism, stated this on Thursday. He was speaking at the first UN Tourism summit for Africa and the Americas in his capacity as the president of the Regional Commission for the Americas. This event took place in Dominican Republic’s main tourist destination.
“We need a long-term vision that enhances each destination’s strengths and handles their weaknesses,” said the official. “This vision must also build a diverse product for all market segments.”
He emphasized the need for strategic alliances involving public and private sectors. Collado explained the government’s role is to develop realistic strategies, promote industry growth by investing in infrastructure, ensure physical and legal security, and strengthen international relations.

He highlighted the importance of encouraging private investment. Collado believes it is the key to industry expansion. He made this statement in front of representatives from more than 30 countries at the meeting.
Once these strategies are employed, the responsibility of fostering tourism lies with everyone. Collado stated, “It will become easier for the world to access our cultural wealth.”
The cradle of humanity- two lands
Despite over 1,600 kilometers separating Africa and America, they share a cultural and historical bond. This was echoed in Collado’s statement, “Today, we are at the midpoint between two lands that served as the humanity’s cradle and the home of the New World.”
He appreciated the presence of all ministers at the international conference. He expressed his conviction that this summit will be the catalyst for African and American continents to work together in promoting and developing tourism.
He emphasized the strong ties between the Dominican Republic and Africa. He highlighted how they share a rich history that has enriched their cultural aspects. Collado believes this shared heritage encourages them to work together for a brighter future.
He stated that tourism is not just an economic activity, but a platform to showcase our culture to the world. Thus, African countries lead in local investment in tourism and the Dominican Republic is focusing its efforts on the industry.
Routes
Collado reports that the Dominican Republic has marked its place in history with over 200 air routes, 93 cruise lines, 80,000 hotel rooms and more than 50 hotel chains.
With 8 international airports and 7 cruise ports, the Dominican Republic welcomed 10.3 million visitors in 2023. This milestone was achieved thanks to the 3,500 tourism providers in the industry and loyalty of 18 thousand travel agents worldwide.
