Washington.- President Luis Abinader, during his speech at the XXVII Annual Conference of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and sustainable development.
He emphasized that true democracy is built on the defense of human rights, which protect the dignity of people and serve as the basis of political legitimacy.
Abinader highlighted his recent constitutional reform proposal, which seeks to limit the presidency to two consecutive terms, preventing any future leader from extending his or her term.
The proposal includes an “oil clause” that would make it difficult to amend the constitution regarding presidential term limits, ensuring that the government remains civil, republican, democratic and representative.
Abinader described this as a preventative measure against political leaders seeking to extend their power for personal gain.
President Abinader also referred to the upcoming 10th Summit of the Americas, which will be held in Punta Cana during the first week of December 2025.
He emphasized that his government is working closely with the OAS Summits Secretariat and the Summit Implementation Review Group to ensure the success of the event, which he considers a key commitment.
