The air traffic from Mexico to the Dominican Republic has seen a dramatic rise following the commencement of Arajet’s operations between the two nations in September 2022.
As per the information on the Dominican Republic Ministry’s statistics portal
Situr.gov.do, the reports show a growth in the number of Mexican tourists to the Dominican Republic. If we compare the data from 2021 to 2024, the surge is 260%, and 133% if compared to 2019. The numbers stand at 49,450 tourists in 2019, 31,907 in 2021, and a huge leap to 115,902 in 2024.
According to the report, the entry of Arajet contributed to the rise in air traffic in both nations, leading to an increase in both passengers and tourists travelling in both directions.
In fact, the outgoing flights from Mexico to the Dominican Republic climbed from 416 in 2021 to 1,190 in 2024, showing a growth rate of more than 180%.
Increases in flights and passenger number are not only due to Arajet, but other actors in the aviation market have also seen growth since the Dominican airline’s entrance, share the experts.
Indeed, in 2024, out of the total Mexican tourists visiting the Dominican Republic, 33.2% came to the country through AreaT, 29.6% through Cup and 26.8% through Aeromexico.
Víctor Pacheco, the CEO and founder of AreaT, terms this as the “AreaT effect.” “Markets where we have begun flights have witnessed a reduction in prices and an increase in passenger numbers. This is excellent for competitiveness, for passengers, and for countries. Currently, all airlines connecting Mexico with the Dominican Republic are transporting more passengers than two years ago, which means more people got a chance to visit these nations, and that fills us with pride,” he explains.

The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic states that the age of Mexicans visiting the Caribbean nation spans from 20 to over 50 years. 67.9% of these visitors are tourists, 18.6% are in the country for business and 9.9% are visiting friends or family members.
These trends reflect the sunrise in visitors from Mexico between 2023 and 2024, wherein imports rose by 7.8% and exports soared by 23.83% with items that boosted the economy of both nations through trade and business.
The report from Situr also emphasizes that the Mexicans tour the Dominican Republic’s additional tourist attractions such as Isla Saona, Buggie or 4 Wheel, snorkeling, the colonial city, Zipline, horseback rides, and excursions to Isla Catalina and theme parks.
