At the first UN Tourism Summit for Africa and the Americas, Argentina’s Secretary of Tourism, Environment and Sports, Daniel Scioli, voiced his nation’s eagerness to sign the open skies treaty with the Dominican Republic. He emphasized the significance of the passenger flow between the two countries.
During his presence at the summit, Scioli stated that discussions would cover certain elements of this prospective pact which would potentially boost passenger numbers and reduce serial ticket costs through healthy competition.
The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, affirmed his support for the sentiments expressed by Minister Scioli. Collado also announced that he had secured the backing of President Luis Abinader for the treaty’s signing. The President of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), Hector Porcella, is also present at the summit and has the commanding authority to proceed with the treaty’s signing.
In 2023, a total of 199,668 passengers from Argentina visited the Dominican Republic. By August 2024, there were already 170,011 registered, indicating a likelihood of surpassing last year’s figures. This projection takes into account the new Arajet airline flights connecting Buenos Aires with Punta Cana, starting this month, and additional flights from other cities by Aerolíneas Argentinas. The present Argentinian government has already signed eight other open skies agreements.
