Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Immigration clarified that the new reception center in Ciudad Juan Bosch, Santo Domingo Este is intended to house foreigners in irregular immigration situations. The center will provide temporary accommodation while preparations are made for their repatriation, ensuring they are treated with the utmost respect.
The organization emphasized the new approach in immigration policies implemented by the Dominican Government. This includes establishing a suitable temporary accommodation structure. The new detention center will be used for transferring undocumented foreigners during simultaneous operations carried out by Migration in the Eastern region and Greater Santo Domingo. This eliminates the need to transport detainees to the Haina Vacation Reception Center, which had been used for detainees in all 32 provinces.
The new center will not be used for long-term housing of foreigners without legal registration. Its purpose is to improve the institution’s ability to respond effectively to irregular migration flows while respecting human rights and international agreements.
The project is part of a comprehensive plan that began with acquiring new and safe transportation units, including drones and other technological equipment, to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants.
In 2023, the General Directorate of Immigration deported 206,684 undocumented foreigners, mainly Haitians, without adequate documentation for legal status in the Dominican Republic. The institution also deported individuals from several other countries, including Americans, Cubans, Venezuelans, Colombians, Ecuadorians, Chinese, Puerto Ricans, Pakistanis, and others. A bidding process has been initiated for the design and preparation of architectural plans for the construction project, which can be accessed through file DGM-DAF-CM-2023-0070 circulating on social networks.
