Salcedo — Cooperatives are vital to the country’s economic growth and serve as the backbone for the progress of various national sectors. Therefore, government support is needed for their continued development.
Yudelka Jiménez, the General Manager of Cooperativa La Unión, voiced her satisfaction with how cooperatives are fulfilling their intended purpose today.
On National Cooperative Day, October 25, the community leader urged government authorities and other sectors that impact the nation’s development to continue their support for cooperatives. She highlighted that many find cooperatives as the most viable means of development.
According to Jiménez, cooperatives are not just financial institutions. They play a crucial role in providing solutions and financial education to sectors previously overlooked. The impact is evident not only in the Hermanas Mirabal province, where Coopunión has multiple branches, but also throughout the northeastern region.
Not only Coopunión but also all cooperatives around the country are doing commendable work. They play significant roles in financial education and other areas crucial for the welfare of our societies,” stated Jiménez.

The Dominican Republic celebrates National Cooperative Day every October 25. On this day in 1963, Law No. 31-63 was passed, establishing the Institute for Cooperative Development and Credit (IDECOOP).
This law, proposed by Professor Juan Bosch’s economic team, was a critical factor in national development. But it wasn’t until the Triumvirate’s mandate that it was embraced as a crucial element against poverty.
