Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. – In an exclusive interview with Punta Cana Post, Tourism Minister David Collado addressed the long-standing concerns over the deterioration of El Cortecito, a coastal area considered one of Bávaro–Punta Cana’s most emblematic tourism spots.

When asked about the specific budget for El Cortecito, the minister clarified that the financial plan covers the entire province of La Altagracia, not just one neighborhood.

“We are conducting the proper assessments, but I can confirm that for the province as a whole—including the Bávaro–Punta Cana destination—we are carrying out an investment of around RD$600 million,” Collado revealed.

Ongoing Infrastructure Projects Across La Altagracia

According to the minister, much of that investment is already being executed through different works that directly benefit the region:

  • First, second, and third phases of Macao beach improvements.
  • The Via Sacra in Higüey, near the Basilica, a place of religious and cultural importance.
  • Domingo Maíz Street, upgraded with nearly RD$200 million.
  • Verón Boulevard, completed at a cost of almost RD$400 million.
  • Extensive asphalting in Verón neighborhoods.

Collado stressed that these projects are part of a comprehensive vision for the province, not isolated interventions.

What’s Next: El Cortecito and Uvero Alto

The minister mentioned that additional meetings are planned with local authorities, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to prioritize upcoming projects.

One of the most pressing is a 7-kilometer roadway in Uvero Alto, valued at more than RD$300 million, alongside the long-anticipated redevelopment plan for El Cortecito.

“On Monday we will meet with stakeholders to identify the priority works. Both El Cortecito and Uvero Alto are on the table, and from there we will design the action plan,” explained Collado.

A Province-Wide Strategy

While enthusiasm grows around the promise of improvements in El Cortecito, Collado reiterated that the ministry’s approach is to organize and strengthen the entire Bávaro–Punta Cana destination. The objective, he said, is to guarantee sustainable development that benefits tourism, local communities, and the wider economy of La Altagracia.
