Minister David Collado Urges Opposition to Keep Tourism Non-Political
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, has called on the opposition not to politicize the country’s thriving tourism industry. Collado emphasized that tourism currently accounts for 60% of the nation’s economic growth. He remains focused on the sector’s continuous growth and aims to attract close to 10 million tourists by year-end.
“We will not waver on this matter under any circumstances. Tourism is robust, solid, and continuously expanding,” stated Collado.
He highlighted the significant investments being made in new hotel construction and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting such initiatives and activities. Collado assured that his administration will continue prioritizing tourism, just as he did during his tenure as mayor. He stressed the importance of maintaining trust and avoiding the politicization of tourism, acknowledging that the opposition understands this crucial aspect.
Collado made these remarks during the launch of the fourth edition of “Turizoneando,” a program of cultural activities in the Colonial City as part of the Tourism in Every Corner project. The minister emphasized the program’s role in promoting the Colonial City as a tourist destination and highlighted the Ministry of Tourism’s investments, totaling more than 250 million pesos.
These investments encompass the renovation of Alcázar de Colón, the Museum of the Royal Houses, and the Puerta de la Misericordia, along with interventions on over 15 facades of churches and iconic buildings in the Colonial City.
Collado also mentioned the ongoing rehabilitation of 11 streets in the Colonial City funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which includes underground electrical systems and storm drainage. These interventions are aimed at preserving the Colonial City’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the significant influx of tourists from Punta Cana and Bávaro to the Colonial City, underscoring its importance for the overall tourism sector.
