Dominican Government: Trade Measures with Haiti Can Be More Flexible, But Not Immigration Measures

Santo Domingo.- During a conversation with journalists from LA Semanal con la Prensa, President Luis Abinader clarified his statement from last week regarding the border with Haiti. He mentioned that due to the conflict over the construction of a canal in the river Slaughter, the border will undergo significant changes.

The president explained that while some commercial actions at the border may become more flexible, he does not anticipate the same flexibility in immigration matters, especially in the coming months. He emphasized the need for protection if there is any military action in Haiti.

Abinader proudly celebrated the UN Security Council’s approval of a multinational force deployment in Haiti, which will be led by Kenya. He considered this a triumph for Dominican diplomacy, achieved through persistent, strategic, and intelligent efforts.

The president expressed his belief in the positive impact of Kenya’s intervention in Haiti, benefiting the entire region including both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He reiterated that while the Dominican Republic will offer diplomatic support to the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, it will not directly engage in military actions in the neighboring country.

Abinader also mentioned an increase in annual spending on the border, with special incentives for personnel, the acquisition of new equipment, and improvements to the Dajabón fortress. He announced the upcoming inauguration of a perimeter fence in Jimaní.

The president highlighted his government’s commitment to dialogue and acting fairly within the bounds of the law. Some border measures will be temporary while others will be permanent.
