Dominican Republic Sets New Travel Records Despite Slower Shoulder Season

The Dominican Republic has just smashed its all-time travel record for September. Over 549,000 international visitors came to the country despite it being the low season.

The country has made strides in improving its international reputation, safety, and infrastructure. This has resulted in a record number of travelers choosing the Dominican Republic for their next holiday.

As the Caribbean nation prepares for more visitors this winter, here’s the latest on its soaring popularity.

Travel numbers are increasing worldwide, and the Dominican Republic is no exception. In September, the country reported a record-breaking 545,990 international travelers, including more Americans and Canadians.

Typically, September to November is a quiet period for the country’s travel industry, with winter and summer being busier. However, this year saw a 48% increase in international travelers compared to 2019, indicating a growing preference for tropical destinations. September’s travel numbers also increased by 11% compared to the previous year.

In 2023, over 7.6 million tourists have already visited the Dominican Republic, and the country is on track to welcome over 10 million by the end of the year. This would solidify its position as a leading destination in the Caribbean region.

According to international studies, including Tripadvisor, the Dominican Republic is more popular than Playa del Carmen in the Mexican Caribbean. The island destination has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Places to Visit in 2023.

Although most travelers arrive in the Dominican Republic by air, an increasing number are opting for short cruises. Ports like Amber Cove are welcoming larger vessels, and a new project in Pedernales will soon introduce the country’s newest cruise ship terminal, Port Cabo Rojo.

The Dominican Republic’s popularity is soaring among various groups, including young travelers and digital nomads. Its combination of safety, affordable accommodations, and unique culture make it a highly sought-after destination in 2023.

The country boasts several traveler-friendly destinations, including Punta Cana, which attracts up to 70% of all international tourists. This coastal city is a paradise for resort lovers, offering over 60 stunning properties with outdoor pools and breathtaking views of white-sand beaches.
