ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez led the first ministerial meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG) this week, marking a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 10th Summit of the Americas. The high-level event is scheduled to take place on December 5, 2025, in Punta Cana.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in St. John’s, provided the Dominican Republic with an opportunity to brief member states on its planning progress and announce key pre-summit initiatives. These include three major sectoral forums: the Civil Society Forum, the Youth Forum, and the Business Forum, all designed to foster inclusive dialogue and regional collaboration ahead of the main summit.
Minister Álvarez outlined the central theme of the upcoming summit: “Building a Secure, Sustainable Hemisphere of Shared Prosperity.” He highlighted the importance of focusing on human security as a guiding framework for regional development. According to Álvarez, the summit will center on four core pillars: citizen security, food security, energy security, and water security—issues he described as among the most urgent structural challenges facing the Americas today.
“These pillars are not abstract priorities,” Álvarez told ministers and delegates. “They are the foundation of democratic legitimacy, good governance, and inclusive development across our hemisphere.”
By addressing these interconnected issues, the summit seeks to promote long-term regional stability and cooperation. Álvarez emphasized that the Dominican Republic is committed to facilitating a meaningful and results-driven dialogue among participating nations.
“The road to Punta Cana is exciting not only because of its beautiful beaches,” he said, “but because it offers a unique opportunity to build a shared hemispheric agenda that reflects the collective aspirations of our people.”
This is the first time the Dominican Republic will host the Summit of the Americas, a forum established in 1994 to bring together leaders from North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean, to discuss regional policy and cooperation.
As the host nation, the Dominican Republic will play a key role in shaping the summit’s agenda, coordinating logistics, and ensuring that diverse voices—from civil society to the private sector—are heard. The country’s leadership of the SIRG meeting signals its proactive engagement and commitment to delivering a successful summit in 2025.
Further details about the summit’s programming and participating delegations are expected to emerge in the coming months as preparations continue.
