Dominican Society of Spine Surgery Hosts Ninth Congress with Focus on Innovations

Punta Cana – The Dominican Society of Spine Surgery officially opened its Ninth Congress in Punta Cana, bringing together leading national and international specialists to exchange expertise and discuss the latest advancements in spinal surgery.

Running from July 24 to 27, the event is designed to promote knowledge-sharing and highlight cutting-edge developments in spinal health. Dr. Lizardi de la Cruz, president of the Society, expressed gratitude for the widespread support received during his administration and welcomed the participation of both Dominican and international experts.

“In this Ninth Congress, we have developed a high-level scientific program focused on the most current and relevant topics. Our main goal is to foster knowledge exchange and provide updates aligned with scientific progress,” said Dr. de la Cruz during the opening ceremony.

Key Topics and Innovations in Spine Surgery

Throughout the congress, medical professionals will present on a range of topics including new surgical techniques and clinical approaches. Highlights include:

  • “Facet Joints in the Vertebral Column: Anatomy and Pathology,” a keynote address delivered by Dr. Jorge Lastra of Puerto Rico.

  • Cervical spine alignment and digital balance

  • Cervical degenerative pathology

  • Current approaches to adjacent level disease in spinal surgery

  • Surgical decision-making: When to say no

  • Pseudoarthrosis and spinal infections

  • Management of adolescent hyperkyphosis

  • Anticoagulation therapy in spinal cord trauma

  • Pros and cons of indirect surgical decompression in lumbar degenerative disease

Recognition of Dr. Freddy Antonio Flores Lebrón

During the opening ceremony, the Society honored Dr. Freddy Antonio Flores Lebrón for his contributions to neurosurgery and medical education. Recognized as a mentor and leader, Dr. Flores previously coordinated the National Neurosurgery Residency Program (2014–2017) and currently serves as Chief of Service since 2018.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Flores thanked the Society and encouraged aspiring healthcare professionals to dedicate themselves fully to delivering quality care to every patient.
