Excitement Builds for the 2024 National Digital Journalism Award, as Observed by the Dominican Digital Media Observatory

A call to action encourages digital media and journalists to submit their proposals. It is set to be presented on November 26 at the National Theater.

The Dominican Digital Media Observatory has stirred a significant excitement through the call for entries to participate in the VIII National Digital Journalism Award of the Dominican Republic. This award acknowledges the endeavors of journalists, communicators, and digital media holders.

According to Cristal Acevedo, the director of the Observatory, it is backed by Banco Popular, the Punta Cana Macao Energy Consortium, Aden Business School, and Grabo Estilo.

Journalists and digital media editors that we have interviewed express that this call-to-action is motivating their teams to submit proposals, and that they are also intending to submit entries as a platform. This is perceived as an incentive for rather new communication tasks within the media context. Cristal Acevedo announced that the delivery would occur at the Aida Bonnelly room of the National Theater, on Tuesday, November 26, at 7:00 p.m.

The terms of the award can be accessed on the Dominican Digital Media Observatory’s website using this link: https://www.observatoriodemediosdigitales.com/premio.

The foundation of printed newspapers can be traced back to the gazettes. Initially discovered in Antwerp, this model was later replicated by other European states – the New Antwerp Tijdinghe was first issued in French and Flemish in 1604 in Spain. These publications gained significant influence, first emerging in Madrid and Seville in 1661.

The The Daily Courant launched in 1702 in England under the directorship of Samuel Buckeley, it marked the first instance of a newspaper designed with the current known format. This model inspired the eventual development of such media in the United States.

The National Digital Journalism Award of the Dominican Republic is a project that acknowledges journalists, communicators, and digital media owners that facilitate high-quality content on the internet—providing accurate and timely information to safeguard the citizen’s right to information. On another note, the first digital news agency to possess a computer was the American Daily Oklahoma in 1963. However, the media that first pioneered the internet is unclear. Some experts suggest it was the ‘San José Mercury News’ while others argue it was the Californian ‘Palo Alto Weekly’. There is a consensus that the first digital newspapers emerged between 1993 and 1995 in the United States.
