Grupo Puntacana to Operate on 70% Renewable Energy by 2026, Announces CEO Frank Elías Rainieri at Top Resa
Paris, France – During the Top Resa 2025 International Tourism Fair, Frank Elías Rainieri, President and CEO of Grupo Puntacana, unveiled one of the most ambitious green energy projects in the Caribbean tourism sector.
In an interview with Moisés González from Despertar Nacional and TV Quisqueya, Rainieri confirmed that the project includes the installation of 35 megawatts in solar panels and 50 megawatts in battery storage systems, scheduled to go live between March and April 2026.
Punta Cana: A Global Benchmark in Renewable Tourism
According to Rainieri, through the Corporación Turística de Servicios Punta Cana (CTSPC), the group will integrate its isolated energy systems under one unified project, enabling 70% of Punta Cana’s electricity to be sourced from renewable energy.
This achievement will position Punta Cana as the only destination in the Americas with such a high level of renewable supply, and one of the few worldwide. The initiative comes at a crucial time, as the Dominican Republic faces challenges in its national electricity grid, including long blackouts affecting productivity and daily life.
Lower Costs and Stronger Sustainability
Rainieri emphasized that beyond its environmental benefits, the project will significantly reduce energy costs across Puntacana’s resorts and facilities, ensuring both efficiency and sustainability for years to come.
The initiative further solidifies Punta Cana’s global standing as a world leader in sustainable tourism and a benchmark for eco-driven destinations.
A History of Environmental Leadership
Grupo Puntacana has long championed sustainability through pioneering programs such as coral reef restoration, fish repopulation projects, aquifer protection, and mangrove reforestation. These actions, combined with the new energy strategy, reinforce its dedication to preserving natural resources while leading innovation in tourism.
Adding to the momentum, Rainieri highlighted the launch of the Dominican Republic’s first electric vehicle fleet for tourism, introduced this week by W2M-BDX, World2Meet, and Grupo Iberostar. The project has the backing of the INTRANT (National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation) and leading entrepreneurs such as Juan Tomás Díaz, President of United Petroleum, showcasing a joint vision for a clean energy and sustainable mobility ecosystem in Punta Cana.
With these advancements, Punta Cana is not only setting the standard for tourism in Latin America but also becoming a global model for the integration of renewable energy and responsible travel practices.
