The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported this Sunday that Hurricane Erin has weakened to Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour.

The storm is now moving at 20 kilometers per hour and was located about 280 kilometers northeast of Punta Cana. According to the National Meteorological Institute (Indomet), Erin is expected to continue advancing northwest before shifting northward by Monday.

Heavy rainfall associated with the hurricane is forecast for Sunday afternoon and evening, with more moderate showers expected to continue into Monday. Rainfall amounts between 60 and 80 millimeters are projected across provinces along the Atlantic coast.

The COE has placed the provinces of La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, María Trinidad Sánchez, Montecristi, El Seibo, Samaná, Espaillat, and Puerto Plata under a yellow alert. Meanwhile, the National District and Santo Domingo province remain under a green alert due to the risk of flooding.

General Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the COE, advised that vessels along the Atlantic coast remain in port, while those navigating the Caribbean coast proceed with extreme caution due to high waves.
