Ibero-American Consumer Protection Forum to Take Place in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Republic will host the XVII Ibero-American Forum of Government Consumer Protection Agencies (FIAGC), to be held from November 1 to 4, with the attendance of President Luis Abinader and other important authorities from the countries that make up the international organization.

The opening ceremony of the conclave, in which for the first time a Caribbean country, represented by the National Institute of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) of the Dominican Republic, will assume the presidency of the FIAGC for the period 2023-2024, will be held at the Las Américas lounge at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in the capital.

The inauguration is announced for Thursday, November 2 at 9:00 in the morning, with the presence of the heads of government consumer protection agencies from twenty countries that have already confirmed their attendance, as well as representatives of organizations international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations Confederation on Trade and Development (UNCTAD-UN), the Competition and Consumer Protection Program in Latin America (COMPAL), among other authorities of the member countries of the FIAGC.

At the event, the Undersecretary of Actions for the Defense of Consumers of Argentina, Lucila Bueti, will transfer the presidency of the Ibero-American Forum of Government Consumer Protection Agencies to Dr. Eddy Alcántara, executive director of Pro Consumidor.

Alcántara will deliver the opening words to his management at the head of the international organization.

As established in the event program, the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, will have the closing words of the opening ceremony.

During the forum, different topics will be discussed, such as “What will be the next steps for the resolution of cross-border consumer disputes”, “How to strengthen consumer associations” and “The future of Latin American regional cooperation”.

Within the framework of the conclave, the 10th Annual Ordinary Meeting of the Consumer and Health Network of the Organization of American States (OAS) will also be held.

On Saturday, November 4, the event will take place at TRS Turquesa, in Punta Cana, where a report will be offered on the management of the outgoing presidency of the FIAGC and the working groups will intervene on the topics of Consumption and Gender; Updating and Promotion of the FIAGC chair; Electronic Commerce; Deceptive and Abusive Advertising; Sustainable Consumption and Production and Collective Actions.

The election of Eddy Alcántara as president of the FIAGC

The executive director of Pro Consumidor, Eddy Alcántara, was unanimously elected president of the Ibero-American Forum of Government Consumer Protection Agencies within the framework of the XVI Assembly of that organization, held in November 2022 in Argentina.

The candidacy of the Dominican official was proposed by the representatives of Paraguay and El Salvador, Juan Marcelo Estigarribia López and Ricardo Salazar, respectively, who valued Alcántara’s management at the head of Pro Consumidor and the excellent results obtained by the Caribbean country during his management.
