Lisbon – Senior executives from Iberojet-Portugal, part of Spain’s Ávoris Corporación Empresarial, met with the Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Brazil, Patricia Villegas de Jorge, to explore the development of a key flight route that would increase service to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.
The meeting marked a strategic move by the airline to deepen its presence in the Dominican market by offering more frequent flights throughout the year. Discussions focused on reinforcing air connectivity between Portugal and the Dominican Republic, especially from Lisbon and Porto, two critical departure hubs in the Iberian Peninsula.
Ambassador Villegas de Jorge highlighted the increasing demand among both Dominican expatriates in Portugal and Portuguese travelers, as well as citizens from other European Union countries, for more direct flights to the Caribbean nation. She stressed the Dominican Republic’s growing role as a regional hub for logistics and tourism, reinforcing the need for expanded air routes.
The ambassador was received by Antonio Loureiro, General Manager of Iberojet Portugal; Nuno Marques, Director of Operations; and Don Constantino, as the parties discussed concrete steps to strengthen travel ties between the two nations.
In the interim, Iberojet executives reminded travelers that direct flights from Lisbon to Punta Cana are already in operation for the summer season, departing every Monday at 3:40 p.m. (Lisbon time) and arriving at 6:50 p.m. (local time in Punta Cana).
They also clarified that flights to Samaná and La Romana are currently operated as charter services, available exclusively through tour operators.
“We are committed to improving air access to the Dominican Republic,” the airline said in a statement. “Very soon, we’ll have updates on additional flight routes that will further enhance connectivity with the Caribbean.”
The meeting signals renewed momentum for strengthening Dominican-European tourism ties, as travel rebounds and airlines position themselves to meet rising demand.
