Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – The Dominican Republic’s aviation sector has closed 2025 with record-breaking figures, solidifying its role as a powerhouse for national economic growth. According to Igor Rodríguez, Director General of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), the country registered a staggering 217,620 air operations over the past year, facilitating the movement of 19,676,193 passengers through its international airports.
These figures represent more than just statistics; they reflect a surge in international traveler confidence and the robust health of the Dominican civil aviation system. Rodríguez emphasized that the aeronautical sector has become a fundamental pillar in strengthening the nation’s economy, driven by high standards of safety and operational efficiency.
A Commitment to Safety and Operational Excellence
In a statement shared via social media, the IDAC chief extended his gratitude to the institution’s technical and administrative staff. “My recognition goes to the IDAC team for their tireless work throughout the year to ensure the quality of every process and the absolute safety of our air operations,” Rodríguez noted.
The institution continues to prioritize operational safety and sustainable development, ensuring that the Dominican Republic remains a competitive and reliable hub for international airlines and travelers alike.
2026: A Year of Technological Transformation
Looking ahead to 2026, IDAC is set to implement a series of high-tech infrastructure upgrades designed to provide total radar coverage across the national territory.
1. National Meteorological Triangulation
In February, IDAC will inaugurate the country’s third C-band Meteorological Doppler radar. Located at the Dominican Aeronautical Complex near Las Américas International Airport (AILA), this new equipment will work in tandem with existing radars in Puerto Plata (Loma Isabel de Torres) and Punta Cana. This strategic triangulation will provide 100% meteorological coverage, significantly enhancing flight safety and weather forecasting.
2. Expansion to the South: Cabo Rojo Airport
As part of the government’s push to develop the “New South,” Rodríguez confirmed that IDAC is currently finalizing the procurement of all essential aeronautical equipment for the Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales. This infrastructure is critical for the upcoming tourism boom in the Enriquillo region.
3. Modernization at Cibao International
The modernization efforts also extend to the northern region. Plans are underway to install a state-of-the-art primary and secondary radar system at Cibao International Airport this year. These upgrades are part of a comprehensive national strategy to ensure that Dominican airspace remains among the most technologically advanced in the Caribbean.
Why This Matters for the Dominican Economy
The continued investment in aviation infrastructure—from Pedernales to Puerto Plata—ensures that the Dominican Republic can handle the increasing demand from international markets. By integrating advanced radar technology and expanding airport capabilities, IDAC is not only protecting passengers but also securing the long-term profitability of the nation’s tourism and logistics sectors.
