Invasive Coral Workshop Focuses on Unomia stolonifera Organism in Punta Cana

Punta Cana. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MMARN) organized a training workshop on the Unomia stolonifera coral in Punta Cana. Representatives from social organizations, divers, and fishermen from the Eastern region attended.

The Unomia stolonifer coral, an aggressive invasive species from Asia, poses a threat to local specimens. Dominican authorities and dedicated entities are taking action to address this issue.

The workshop, led by the Vice Ministry of Coastal and Marine Affairs in collaboration with the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, was conducted by Dr. Aldo Croquer from The Nature Conservancy.

The second session of the training workshop, held in Bayahibe in both face-to-face and virtual formats, was conducted by Fundemar. It focused on communities along the South East coast and provided information about this coral species reported in Venezuela, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
