Renowned Dominican writer, Manuel Matos Moquete, was recognized with the esteemed Eduardo León Jimenes 2024 National Book Fair Award. His latest work, The crucible and the sieve. Learning Stories, was published by Instituto Superior de Formación Docente Salomé Ureña (ISFODOSU).
The Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation and the Ministry of Culture presented the award. It honors Matos Moquete and acknowledges ISFODOSU’s dedication to promoting culture and education.
The crucible and the sieve goes beyond a simple autobiography and delves into Dominican identity, education, and heritage. Matos Moquete takes his readers on a journey of his life and shares experiences.
Matos Moquete expressed gratitude for the award and hopes his book will inspire others.
The jury recognized the book’s influence on the educational value of learning.
The Eduardo León Jimenes National Book Fair Award, in its 27th edition, received 53 literary submissions. The winner receives one million Dominican pesos as the prize.
María Amalia León, president of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation, acknowledged books’ unifying force. Milagros Germán, the Minister of Culture, saw the award as an encouragement for the future.
Matos Moquete thanked ISFODOSU and its rector, Dr. Nurys del Carmen González Durán, and the Publications Department team after the ceremony.

The Crucible and the Sieve was officially launched at the 25th Santo Domingo International Book Fair 2023. Eminent intellectuals like Manuel Núñez, Emilia Pereyra, and Carlos Cabrera shared their thoughts at the event.
Dr. González Durán was delighted that Matos Moquete chose ISFODOSU for his publication, aligning with the institution’s mission of training exceptional educators.
Matos Moquete has received multiple awards, including the National Novel Award in 1983, several Annual Essay Awards, the National Didactic Award in 2005. In 2009, he received the Caonabo de Oro Award recognizing his literary career.
He also won the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Essay Prize in 2012 and the National Literature Prize in 2019, among other recognitions.
