U.S. expats living in the Dominican Republic, or elsewhere, often worry about their voting rights in U.S elections. This concern commonly arises during presidential election seasons.
You may vote through absentee ballot as an expat, but start the process early.
Here’s how:
1. Confirm your Eligibility
U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic are typically eligible to vote in U.S. federal elections. Certain state and local election rules, however, may affect your eligibility for state and local votes. You must be registered to vote in the U.S. before moving, or be able to register in your former state.
2. Register to Vote and Request an Absentee Ballot
Fill out the FPCA and send it to your U.S. local election office. Aim to do this early in the year, or a minimum 45 days prior to election, for optimal processing time.
