Santo Domingo – The Eastern Electricity Distribution Company (Edeeste) announced on Friday that it is carrying out a major electrical infrastructure upgrade in Santo Domingo Este, focused on discharging Circuit EBRI05 to improve service quality for more than 12,000 customers.

The initiative, currently in the execution phase, aims to offload 9,503 MVA from the overloaded EBRI05 circuit and redirect that capacity to the newly constructed EBRI12 circuit. The move is expected to directly benefit 6,612 families and create the capacity to connect an additional 14,086 users, according to the company.

Edeeste explained that recent service interruptions in the area have been linked to these technical upgrades. The company also noted that the fluctuations in nighttime electricity service are the result of increased energy demand, a key factor prompting the intervention on the circuit.

Currently, Circuit EBRI05 is operating at 130% of its capacity, with a demand load exceeding 16,377 MVA. After the discharge, the load is projected to drop to approximately 6,632 MVA (52%), significantly enhancing operational efficiency, reducing technical losses, and extending the lifespan of electrical assets.

Areas Affected

The project will impact the following communities in Santo Domingo Este:

  • San Isidro Labrador

  • Nueva Jerusalén Urbanization

  • Aguas Locas

  • Luz María

  • Los Frailes I and II

  • Nuevo Renacer (Racetrack)

  • Prados del Este

  • Las Orquídeas I and II

  • Ciudad del Este

  • San Bartolo de Los Frailes

  • Surrounding neighborhoods

According to Edeeste, the division of Circuit EBRI05 is expected to result in annual savings of RD$3.78 million by reducing technical energy losses.

Maintenance and Preparedness Efforts

In parallel with the circuit improvements, Edeeste emphasized its ongoing efforts to maintain and reinforce the electrical grid, particularly in anticipation of the 2025 hurricane season, which forecasters predict will be highly active across the Caribbean. Since May, the company has intensified:

  • Grid inspections

  • Replacement of deteriorated structures

  • Reinforcement of power lines

  • Technical pruning of trees near power infrastructure

These actions form part of a preventive and strategic maintenance plan aimed at ensuring network resilience and service continuity during extreme weather events and periods of high energy demand.

Edeeste expressed its regret for any inconvenience caused by recent service disruptions and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening infrastructure to deliver more stable and efficient electricity to its users.
