Santo Domingo, DR – President Luis Abinader has publicly acknowledged the persistence of corruption along the Dominican Republic’s border, but emphasized that his administration is the first to take concrete and forceful steps to combat it.

During his weekly press briefing, La Semanal con la Prensa, Abinader pointed to recent convictions for human trafficking, including a 30-year prison sentence, as clear evidence of his government’s commitment to upholding immigration laws and dismantling illicit networks.

“We are prosecuting and jailing those who enable illegal migration,” the president said, underlining the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward both corruption and irregular border crossings.

As part of broader reforms, the administration has tripled the salaries of border military personnel in an effort to boost morale, reduce the incentive for bribery, and strengthen national security.

President Abinader reiterated that tackling corruption is a cornerstone of his government’s strategy to secure the country’s borders and ensure lawful, regulated migration practices.
