Puerto Plata’s Tourism Industry Shows Signs of Recovery

PUERTO PLATA.- The reactivation of the tourism industry in Puerto Plata is starting to take shape. The Punta Bergantín project is still in its early stages. The number of tourists arriving by air has significantly increased, as reported by the Central Bank.

From January to July 2024, Puerto Plata welcomed 280,290 tourists by air, showing a substantial recovery from the 2021 low of 87,559. Canada and the United States remain the main markets for the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The Punta Bergantín project aims to attract North American visitors by partnering with renowned hotel brands like Hyatt.

Puerto Plata is also experiencing a surge in cruise tourism, solidifying its position as the primary cruise destination in the country. The ports of Amber Cove and Taíno Bay have played a crucial role in this. The Central Bank report indicates a 21.9% year-on-year increase in cruise passenger arrivals during the first seven months of 2024, totaling 1,402,386 visitors.
