Punta Cana International Airport Achieves Level 2 Certification For 40.8% Reduction In Carbon Footprint

Punta Cana International Airport Achieves Level 2 Certification for 40.8% Reduction in Carbon Footprint

The Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) obtained the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) level 2 accreditation for reducing its carbon footprint in its passenger emissions by 40.8%, granted by the carbon footprint reduction program of the International Airport Council (ACI), which recognizes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at airports.

The information was offered by Giovanni Rainieri, director of Airside Operations at the airport, who expressed that “this achievement has a high impact on the environmental management of the airport and on the measures implemented to reduce emissions and the efforts made to have an airport energy efficient and with operations in line with our sustainability strategy.”

The Punta Cana International Airport is the first airport in the Dominican Republic to obtain triple ISO certification (9001, 14001 and 14064-1) and, at the same time, receive the ACA Level 2 Carbon Footprint accreditation from ACI.

The air terminal implemented the ISO 14064-1: 2018 standard, under which the inventory of the airport’s greenhouse gas emissions was carried out, considering this “an important step in our actions to reduce the effects of climate change and contribute to the objective of the sector in terms of emissions reduction.”

Rainieri added that, with the certification, the air terminal reaffirms its commitment to the continuity of its sustainability policy, since such a level of mitigation was possible thanks to the use of self-generated photovoltaic energy and the incorporation of energy efficiency measures, with the use of LED luminaires.

“Achieving a 40.8% reduction per passenger in carbon emissions is an achievement that highlights and emphasizes the airport’s commitment to the challenge of climate change, in accordance with the main goal of decarbonizing the airline sector by 2050,” Rainieri pointed out.
