Puntacana Group and Eurelius collaborate on solar energy project

Punta Cana.- The Puntacana Group and the Eurelius company have joined forces to implement a solar energy generation project aimed at supplying more than 50% of the energy consumed in the community of Punta Cana. This initiative underlines Grupo Puntacana’s commitment to environmental sustainability, contributing to the development of a more ecological destination.

The projected impact of the project is substantial, as more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided per year and a significant reduction in energy costs. The plan includes the installation of more than 30 MWp of solar production and more than 50 MWh of battery storage, making Punta Cana one of the few Latin American cities that generates more than 50% of its energy from renewable sources.

Frank Elías Rainieri, president and CEO of Grupo Puntacana, highlighted the organization’s dedication to caring for the environment and the well-being of the community. The initiative builds on previous efforts, including the installation of solar panels at the Punta Cana International Airport and the Puntacana International School.

Rainieri highlighted the positive impact of the project in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stating: “By reducing energy generation with fossil fuels, we contribute to a cleaner and friendlier tourist destination.”

The comprehensive project includes not only the installation of photovoltaic panels but also an energy storage system to improve the stability of the system in response to daily weather variations.

Michael Bellmer, Managing Partner of Eurelius, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Grupo Puntacana in the development of the largest clean energy project in the private industrial and commercial sector in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. He highlighted the importance of the project to the entire region, stating that it represents a milestone for private industrial and commercial groups seeking to reduce electricity costs and carbon footprints through well-managed solar and battery electric storage systems.

The agreement specifies that the photovoltaic plant will be located at the Punta Cana International Airport, with plans for future expansion. This collaboration marks a strategic step towards sustainable energy solutions, marking a significant step for the Caribbean in the adoption of clean energy practices.
