Punta Cana. Today, November 26, the Dominican Republic pays tribute to its greatest musical treasure: merengue. This genre, which is an intrinsic part of the Dominican cultural identity, was proclaimed as a national symbol by presidential decree 619-05 of November 11, 2005. The date was chosen in honor of the first written mention of the term “merengue” in the newspaper El Oasis in 1854.
Merengue, considered a reflection of the Dominican idiosyncrasy, has transcended borders and has established itself as an artistic expression that highlights the joy and unity of the people. In 2019, the country achieved a Guinness Record by bringing together the largest number of couples dancing merengue synchronically, surpassing Russia, which had held the title since 2013.
The journalist Fausto Polanco highlights the patriotic meaning of this Caribbean rhythm, comparing it to the national flag:
«Wherever it is heard, people know it is from the Dominican Republic. “Tourists come eager to see it, and foreign artists interpret it with respect, asking permission as a sign of admiration for this cultural legacy.”
In 2016, UNESCO declared merengue as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its essential role in Dominican daily life. From education to holiday celebrations, merengue unites generations and cultures.
Performed with native instruments such as the güira, the drum and the accordion, its contagious rhythm has conquered not only Latin America, but the entire world, reaffirming Quisqueya as the cradle of this artistic manifestation.
Today, more than ever, the Dominican people proudly celebrate this legacy that is, without a doubt, the musical heart of the nation.
