VERONThe Juanillo Educational Center has started a fundraising campaign to build the necessary classrooms that will allow its students to stop taking classes in an improvised arbor in the courtyard.

However, to date, there has been no support from the community of the Verón-Punta Cana district or from business owners in the tourist area. What was expected to be a massive aid campaign has progressed very slowly, and students are still unable to learn in adequate conditions due to a series of factors that hinder the educational process.

Children are constantly exposed to the sun and distractions from vehicles and people passing by, since the school does not have perimeter fences separating it from the street.

Due to the lack of classrooms, teachers have been forced to teach classes in the same space without dividers, further affecting each student's learning.

Despite efforts to spread the word on social media and other means, no response has been received. As a result, students will continue to be unable to attend classes in suitable classrooms, as there is no one to offer help, and parents have already contributed what they could.

The school is practically abandoned, as no district authority has shown interest in collaborating with the construction of the classrooms, despite constant calls for attention.

Faced with this situation, the teachers and the director of the center have decided to begin construction with the few resources provided by interested parties, with the aim of finishing four classrooms for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades of primary school. It is expected that these classrooms will be able to accommodate between 46 and 55 students.

Construction began on July 14 with the materials they had managed to acquire, but blocks and cement are still needed to complete the structure. Therefore, the Juanillo School is still waiting for helping hands willing to support the children, who are the future of the community.

JUANILLO 2

LACK OF CLASSES

For several years, Juanillo School has been facing space problems, as more and more parents enroll their children, and the school does not have enough classrooms to accommodate them. Previously, students took classes in a church that was temporarily lent to them.

Inside the church, two classrooms were divided by a plywood panel. However, months later, the students had to leave the church due to an electrical problem. A socket, apparently in contact with a water pipe, caused a constant flow of water, wetting the floor.

Both students and teachers had to dry the area, and at one point, a child and a teacher received an electric shock. Faced with this danger, they decided to abandon the church and put up a zinc roof and a gazebo in the school yard so as not to interrupt classes.

However, this solution is not viable in the long term, as classes must be cancelled every time it rains. The 2024-2025 school year began again in the arbor, with blackboards on the ground or hanging on one of the poles supporting the zinc roof.
