En un esfuerzo por fortalecer la capacidad del país para recibir y distribuir ayuda humanitaria en situaciones de emergencia, la República Dominicana creó una Red de Aeropuertos Listos para Desastres, en colaboración del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) y el Grupo DHL, con el apoyo del Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia (COE), el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) y la participación de la Comisión Nacional de Emergencias.

Esta iniciativa incluye a los aeropuertos internacionales Las Américas Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez (SDQ), Punta Cana (PUJ) y del Cibao (STI), que fueron preparados previamente bajo la metodología GARD (Get Airports Ready for Disaster).

La información suministrada por el PNUD, los aeropuertos desempeñan un papel crucial en la recepción de ayuda humanitaria en caso de desastres, como parte de esta iniciativa las entidades actualizarán sus manuales con el entrenamiento de personal clave en los aeropuertos. Este mecanismo fortalece la coordinación entre los diferentes actores tanto del sector privado como del gobierno y los organismos internacionales involucrados en la respuesta humanitaria.

Durante el taller GARD, que fue impartido por especialistas aeroportuarios de DHL, se evaluaron las capacidades actuales de los aeropuertos ante desastres y se revisaron los planes de acción y respuesta. En esta edición, que se llevó a cabo en el aeropuerto de Punta Cana, se buscó estandarizar protocolos de actuación entre los tres aeropuertos y el COE, fortaleciendo la logística y las operaciones ante situaciones de crisis.

Hasta el momento, más de 60 técnicos y técnicas de instituciones clave del Sistema Nacional de Preparación, Mitigación y Respuesta, así como de las autoridades aeroportuarias, han formado parte de este proceso en el marco de este programa.

La creación de esta red tendrá un impacto significativo, optimizando los recursos disponibles, reduciendo tiempos de respuesta y mejorando la recepción y distribución de ayuda humanitaria. Asimismo, fortalecerá la resiliencia del país y fomentará una mayor cooperación regional e internacional, posicionando a la República Dominicana como un centro logístico clave para el Caribe en situaciones de emergencia.
