Punta Cana. If anyone thought that Verón-Punta Cana was only paradisiacal beaches and luxury hotels, they were completely wrong. Now, it also offers an exclusive tour of its “emblematic holes”, strategically distributed throughout all sectors of this town.

The glamorous walk between holes and ditches in the middle of the road begins from the Punta Cana highway, the one that crosses Verón, and continues along the Tourist Boulevard, Barceló Avenue, United States, Germany Avenue to the busy Cortecito.

A unique experience, full of excitement, shocks and, for the most intrepid, guaranteed damage to their vehicles. What a luxury! The situation of the streets in this tourist destination is unprecedented. No one should be surprised to see well-known influencers taking selfies and viral videos showing the holes. Of course it wouldn't be surprising. Anything is possible in these streets adorned with large holes without anyone caring.

Throughout the year, residents have raised their voices, imploring the authorities of the Ministry of Public Works to take action on the matter. But apparently the noise of complaints does not penetrate the walls of their offices, or perhaps they are too busy breaking Christmas cakes. Meanwhile, here we continue, watching how the rains not only water the gardens of the resorts, but also the holes, turning them into water traps worthy of an adventure movie…

COULD BE

The irresponsibility of the Public Works authorities in La Altagracia is such that one might think that they are promoting a new tourism strategy: “The safari of the holes.” After all, what better way to test a vehicle's shock absorbers than by venturing onto these impassable roads? A tourist attraction that is not promoted, but is available to everyone.

In addition to the obvious danger to drivers and pedestrians, there is the damage to the image of Punta Cana. What will tourists think when their luxury taxis have to zigzag through craters that appear to have been caused by meteorites? Could this be the “local authenticity” they are looking for?

It is incomprehensible that an area that contributes so much to the economic development of the country is abandoned to its fate in terms of road infrastructure. The streets of Verón-Punta Cana are not only a shame, but reliable proof of the apathy of those who should ensure the well-being of its inhabitants and the preservation of the international prestige of this town.

Verón-Punta Cana deserves more than excuses and empty promises. If immediate measures are not taken, the holes will go from being a problem to becoming a symbol of what this tourist paradise should never have been.
