Spanish Tourism Leaders Pick the Dominican Republic for Their Christmas Getaways

The Dominican Republic has once again become the preferred Christmas escape for some of the most influential figures in Spain’s tourism industry, who are choosing the country to unwind, reconnect with family, and enjoy the Caribbean at the end of the year.

According to specialized tourism outlet Arecoa.com, several prominent business owners and senior executives are spending their holiday break in different parts of the country, with a clear inclination toward the eastern region.

Destinations such as Punta Cana, Bayahibe, and La Romana are at the top of their list, thanks to their combination of warm weather, high-end resorts, and an atmosphere of privacy and tranquility that contrasts with the intense corporate pace they maintain during the rest of the year.

Iberostar: The Fluxá Family in the Caribbean

Among the most notable visitors is Miguel Fluxá, president of the Iberostar Group, one of Spain’s most important tourism conglomerates. Fluxá arrived in the Dominican Republic accompanied by his wife and his daughter Sabina Fluxá, vice president of the group based in Mallorca.

Their presence reinforces the long-standing relationship between Iberostar and the country, where the brand operates several beachfront hotels and maintains strong investment and employment ties with the local tourism sector.

Piñero Group: Holidays in Playa Nueva Romana

Also spending Christmas in the Dominican Republic is María Encarna Piñero, Global CEO of the Piñero Group, who chose to enjoy the holidays with her family at the Playa Nueva Romana resort complex.

At the head of the group as president is her mother, Isabel García, founder of this tourism company of Murcian origin with a strong footprint in the Caribbean and corporate headquarters in Mallorca. Their stay highlights the importance of the Dominican Republic in the group’s strategy and hotel portfolio.

Palladium Group: Abel Matutes in Bávaro

The president of the Palladium Group, Abel Matutes, is also in the country, enjoying the Christmas period at his renovated resort in Bávaro, a destination he tends to visit each year during this season.

As reported by Arecoa.com, Matutes’ regular presence in Punta Cana underlines his confidence in the destination and in the long-term performance of its hotel operations.

Globalia: Hidalgo Returns to the East

Another regular name on the list is Juan José Hidalgo, president of Globalia, who has once again chosen the Dominican Republic for his traditional Christmas trip.

On this occasion, Hidalgo is spending the holidays in Bayahibe, after having stayed in previous seasons in Cabeza de Toro. His visit coincides with an important milestone for the group: the official launch of the Santo Domingo Bay Convention Resort & Casino in Boca Chica, a relaunch of the historic Hamaca hotel with an announced investment of US$48 million.

Images of Hidalgo, relaxed and smiling, have circulated in recent days on social media, reinforcing the message that Globalia continues to see the Dominican Republic as a key destination within its business network.

Other Spanish Investors and Executives in the Country

Beyond the big, well-known names, other Spanish tourism investors have also chosen to spend the holidays in the Dominican Republic.

Among them is the Fierro family, who maintain a low public profile during their stays, as well as Alejandro Subías, who together with his brother Gabriel leads W2M, the travel division of the Iberostar Group.

Also present is José María Dalmau, Vice President of Business Development at Meliá Hotels International, who opted for Bávaro this year. Dalmau is advancing the construction of a private residence in the area, a gesture that underlines his personal and professional ties with the country and with its tourism development.

Luxury Resorts at Full Capacity

While these Spanish tourism leaders enjoy a few days of rest, Dominican resorts are in the midst of a full high season.

Many hotels—especially those in the luxury segment—are operating near or at full occupancy, hosting not only international tourists but also celebrities, executives, and public figures from Spain and other markets.

The combination of:

  • Warm winter weather
  • Wide hotel offerings and all-inclusive resorts
  • Improved air connectivity
  • Strengthened reputation as a safe and attractive destination

continues to position the Dominican Republic as one of the most desirable places in the Caribbean to close out the year.

A Preferred End-of-Year Destination for the Spanish Tourism Elite

The fact that so many top Spanish tourism entrepreneurs choose the Dominican Republic for their Christmas holidays sends a clear signal:

  • It confirms the country’s strategic importance within the international hotel and travel industry.
  • It strengthens ties between Spanish tourism capital and Dominican destinations such as Punta Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana, and Boca Chica.
  • And it reinforces the image of the Dominican Republic as a trusted, mature, and attractive market—not only for tourists, but also for investors and global decision-makers.

In this 2025 holiday season, the message from the sector’s own leaders is evident: the Dominican Republic remains one of the best places in the Caribbean to invest, to work—and to spend Christmas.
