The Average Tourist Expenditure in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO. Tourism is an industry that contributes more than US$22.19 billion to the Dominican gross domestic product (GDP) during 2022. In addition, it is a sector that generates more than 200,000 jobs and drives other sectors of the economy.

That is part of the Government’s efforts to attract tourists and set a goal of 10 million tourists by 2023. And each of these visitors brings in an average of up to $139 a day.

Another fact of the sector is that a tourist stays for a minimum of five days in hotels. That translates to each person contributing about $800 for a five-day stay in the country.

The amount of the 139 dollars is included in the report “Impact of tourism in the Dominican Republic”, by the firmanalytics.

Regarding the number of US$22,190 millionthe technical vice Minister of Tourism, Jacqueline MoraHe stressed that 50 was generated in an induced manner, through the expenses of employees in the sector.

In his opinion, Frank Elias RainieriPresident of Puntacana Groupspecifies that to produce more consumption among tourists, the supply must be increased through luxury projects.

During the event, the Sixth Tourism Investment Forum highlighted that “only luxury hotels” can increase consumption between 200 and 250 dollars, according to Diario Libre.

«A hotel room can cost you between $200 and $250,000. In a luxury hotel it will cost you from 500,000 to a million dollars of investment, and the return is different. And the bank is already prepared and has the knowledge to do it,” said Rainieri.
