The country still has a high number of houses with zinc roofs

PUNTA CANA. Published by the National Statistics Office (ONE), the tenth National Population and Housing Census 2022 has provided key data on housing in the Dominican Republic.

In 2023, research found that:

  1. There are 3,694,060 private occupied homes in the country, accounting for 83.7%.
  • Of Dominican homes, 47.5% have zinc roofs and 50.9% have concrete roofs. The province of Santo Domingo and the National District have 934,478 occupied homes. Of them, 766,044 are in urban areas while 168,434 are in rural ones.
  • Around 50.9% of homes have cement floors, 34.1% ceramic and 10.4% mosaic. On the other hand, 82% of homes have block or concrete walls, and 13% use wood.
  • In urban areas, 62.7% of homes have an aqueduct inside for water supply, 10% have their water supply in the yard. Only 5% use a public tap. In rural areas, 44% have an in-house aqueduct, while 13% rely on a public tap. Another 7.9% have an aqueduct in their yard.
