The Dominican Republic is now more accessible than ever: 5 key reasons

The popularity of the Dominican Republic is soaring to unprecedented levels in 2023, with more than 8 million travelers expected to arrive in the sun-drenched country. The tropical island’s remarkable growth is fueled by its greatly improved international connectivity, with more airlines launching flights to its major hotspots. Other factors, such as excellent security, are also generating interest in the Caribbean nation, helping make the Dominican Republic one of the most popular choices for American travelers this year.

With that in mind, here are 5 reasons why it will be easier to visit the Dominican Republic than ever in 2023.

Record number of flights this winter
As winter slowly approaches, the major North American airlines have announced a record number of flights to the Dominican Republic this year.

With airlines like Frontier, American Airlines, and Sunwing Airlines planning a 15-30% increase in seat availability to Caribbean destinations, the Dominican Republic occupies a center stage in the eyes of most airlines.

Open Skies Treaties
The Dominican Republic and Canada signed the Open Skies Treaty in February of this year, paving the way for cheaper and more regular flights between the two nations. As a result, a record number of Canadian travelers are expected to arrive in the tropical nation in 2023. New projections show that more than a million Canadians will visit the Dominican Republic this year as more airlines launch routes to the warm destination from major destinations in Canadian centers. The Dominican Republic is also negotiating a similar treaty with the United States, and the talks are expected to conclude in the coming months.

Dominican airlines dominate the scene
The emergence of several key domestic competitors in 2023 is leading to lower airfare prices and greater flexibility on various international routes. This year, the Dominican Republic-based low-cost airline Arajet made history by announcing an ambitious plan to expand its international flight network to Canada and later to the United States.

The airline will operate several non-stop flights to Canada this year, including Toronto, at some of the cheapest fares on the market. With a large and modern fleet, the airline expects to open new connections to the United States later this year or next.

Massive airport renovations
Several ongoing and recently completed renovations at the airport have made the airports of the Dominican Republic more modern, safe, and comfortable for millions of passengers. The most important airport expansion that has recently been completed is that of the Punta Cana International Airport, which involved a series of massive improvements to the largest air hub in the country.

From 7 new airlifts to sweeping changes to security procedures and increased check-in efficiency, the initial $100 million renovation paves the way for the airport’s continued growth for years to come. Another airport that will see much-needed improvements in security and facilities is Cibao International Airport, where officials are working to increase capacity as international passenger traffic grows.

Key investments in airport security
Security is a critical issue for countless travelers, and fortunately, the Dominican Republic stands out as one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean. That security also extends to the country’s airports, which have invested heavily in beefing up measures to protect travelers and deter organized crime.

From new high-tech X-ray machines to sniffer dog teams, the country’s forward-thinking officials leave no room for error. In a recent security inspection, all of the country’s major airports were given the green light by US civil aviation inspectors, who conduct regular checks at North American airports.
