The first THEMAG Punta Cana 2023 Business Forum, held on September 5, 2023, was titled “Tourism 4.0: How AI and sustainability are shaping the future”, with two discussion panels where experts in each subject participated.
The panel “Challenges and opportunities of Sustainable Development in the DR, a commitment of all”, had the wise moderation of Lic. Ernesto Veloz, president of the Eastern Hotels Association, and the participation as panelists of Andrés Bisonó, Founder and CEO from SOS Carbón, who addressed the issue of sargassum and its transformation and use.
Roberto Herrera, CEPM executive director and InterEnergy Group country manager, told us about the challenges that the electricity company faces to achieve zero emissions in 2030. César Vargas, president of IDARD, also spoke, who discussed the problems of the Dominican coasts and beaches; Luz Valentina Lantigua, sustainability manager of the Iberostar Hotels chain, detailed the hotel company’s sustainable plans in the Dominican Republic and its comprehensive Wave of Change program.
The second panel on new technologies and artificial intelligence took us into the challenges of the tourism industry in the face of technological changes and the new rules of the game. For his part, Mr. José David Montilla, Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Presidency, spoke about the challenges of implementing the 2030 Digital Agenda that the government is carrying out and addressed cybersecurity in the tourism sector in the country, with an exercise interactive with attendees.
For his part, Alejandro Arnaud, Systems Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology, explained the advantages for the tourism sector, destinations and companies, of Blockchain technology and its multiple advantages to attract a new tourist.

Jimmy Pons shared knowledge and tools to adapt to this constantly R-evolving world, proposing an innovative and realistic vision of the future of tourism.
“The world is evolving unstoppably and forces us to constantly rethink how we can improve the management of the tourism sector, through innovation and advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence,” said Jimmy.
