Santo Domingo.- Two professionals stand out amidst the 13 Dominican nominees for the Open Passport International Tourism Journalism Award 2024 being awarded in Cali, Colombia this Friday. They are Marvin Del Cid from Guatemala, a photojournalist for Free Newspaper, and Adrian R. Morales who originates from Cuba, the tourism editor of Dominican today and editor of the well-known Hut magazine.
Marvin Del Cid competes in the “Journalistic Investigation” category with his documentary Cacú: A change for life. The film, under Dominican Republic’s film law, tells the story of five fishermen who become conservationists.
Morales’ piece, Short Dominicans: How to deal with holidays in non-inclusive environments, addresses inclusion issues in tourism for travelers with “dwarfism.” It is a finalist in the “Recognition of Others” category.
These award-winning tourism journalists have made the Dominican Republic their home. They illustrate their dedication to Dominican tourism and uphold the country’s reputation with quality journalism.
Marvin Del Cid is an experienced Guatemalan photographer who has worked for various media outlets in Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, with his photographs featured in important global publications. Presently he is with Grupo Diario Libre, where he also directed his first feature-length documentary, Cacú, a change for life. In addition, Marvin also works with Getty Images and is a virtual reality photographer for the 360cities community.
Environmental protection enthusiast, Marvin has displayed his work in ten, five solo and six collective exhibitions. He received several awards for his photography work, including a special mention in the Epifanio Lantigua (PEL) Prize for Tourism Journalism in 2013.
The Cacú documentary sees a collaboration between Marvin and biologist Omar Shamir Reynoso, where fishermen of Manresa were involved in environmental conservation activities, resulting in a model for community conservation efforts.
Adrian R. Morales Gonzalez is a journalist, editor, poet, translator, and proofreader who has received numerous distinctions for his work over the years. Since 2002, Morales has lived in Santo Domingo, working as an editor for several publications and as an editorial proofreader for ISFODOSU Publications Department.
In 2000, he was awarded the ESTI Press Award and he won the International Open Passport Award for “Professional Career” in 2018. In addition to his journalistic prowess, he is also a published poet and is currently working on his first novel.
World Tourism Journalist Day is commemorated on September 5, highlighting the significance of communication in tourism and the ethical duties of specialized journalists.
