Santo Domingo – The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has issued a public safety advisory outlining transportation recommendations for American citizens visiting the country, with a strong warning against the use of motoconchos, or informal motorcycle taxis.
In its official statement, the embassy cited frequent traffic violations and lack of helmet use by motoconcho drivers as key risks, urging travelers to avoid this form of transport entirely. Instead, Americans are encouraged to use authorized taxis that are clearly marked and operated by licensed drivers. Visitors are also advised to negotiate fares in advance to prevent overcharging.
The embassy acknowledged that ride-hailing apps such as Uber are available in major cities including Santo Domingo and Santiago, and recommended verifying the driver’s name and license plate number before boarding.
For tourists opting to rent a car, the embassy noted that it can be a convenient way to explore, but only if accompanied by comprehensive insurance. Officials strongly discourage nighttime driving, citing poor street lighting and erratic traffic behavior as major hazards after dark.
In case of emergencies, U.S. citizens can reach the Tourist Police (Politur) by calling 809-222-2026 or sending a message via WhatsApp to +1-809-520-8665.
The embassy concluded its advisory with a reminder: “A little planning can save a lot of trouble,” urging travelers to remain informed and take basic precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable stay in the Dominican Republic.
