PUNTA CANA. The Ministry of the Interior and Police reported that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) canceled the opening of the Care, Resources and Reference Center for Migrants (CARE) in Punta Cana.
The Vice Ministry of Migration Management and Naturalization expressed disagreement with the center’s inauguration, which did not have the approval of the institution responsible for immigration policy.
This decision comes after collective repudiation, as it goes against the Dominican State’s stance on undocumented Haitians’ regularization and refugee centers.
The Vice Minister of Migration Management and Naturalization, Juan Manuel Rosario, praised IOM’s decision, emphasizing that a State’s migration policy is its own prerogative.
Rosario noted that each State is responsible for admission rules and immigration control, as stated in the IOM constitution.
While recognizing IOM’s support for migration policies, Rosario stressed the importance of policies aligning with each country’s laws.
The Dominican authorities welcome IOM’s withdrawal from opening CARE in Punta Cana, reaffirming their commitment to migration control within the legal framework.
