DIGESETT sobriety checkpoint causes traffic backup at Downtown intersection in Bávaro

The Dominican Republic’s traffic enforcement agency, DIGESETT, deployed a large-scale sobriety checkpoint on Sunday at the Downtown intersection along the Bulevar Turístico del Este in Bávaro, stopping vehicles for breathalyzer tests throughout the day.

Numerous agents were stationed at the traffic light, which sits at one of the highest-volume crossings in the Bávaro–Punta Cana corridor. The operation quickly produced heavy congestion, with long lines of vehicles forming along the boulevard as inspections continued, according to Bávaro Digital.

The intersection is particularly active on weekends due to the concentration of commercial establishments, restaurants and entertainment venues in the surrounding area. That mix of nightlife and heavy vehicle flow makes it a logical point for enforcement, though the scale of Sunday’s deployment caught the attention of drivers passing through.

The checkpoint is part of DIGESETT’s broader effort to identify impaired drivers and reduce traffic accidents in the region. No figures on the number of tests administered or violations detected were reported.

The Bulevar Turístico del Este serves as the main arterial road connecting Bávaro’s hotel zone, residential areas and commercial districts. Disruptions at key intersections like Downtown can ripple through the entire corridor, particularly during peak weekend hours.
