Representatives from Panama’s Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos will join Dominican firefighters in knowledge-sharing exercises. The program emphasizes institutional development, gender inclusion, and improved community protection strategies.

The inclusion of gender-focused training is particularly significant, as emergency services across Latin America work to diversify their ranks and better reflect the communities they serve. In Panama, women now make up nearly 15% of all emergency responders, a figure that Dominican officials hope to mirror through initiatives like this exchange. Themed “Strengthening capabilities, integrating gender and transforming fire response,” the session starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Verón Punta Cana Town Hall. It follows recent safety initiatives in the area, including road safety operations and youth support programs led by POLITUR and the Puntacana Foundation launched earlier this year.

This firefighter training day is part of a broader safety strategy developed by the Verón Punta Cana Municipal Tourism District in coordination with the National Fire Department of the Dominican Republic. Over the past five years, the region has seen a 22% increase in emergency calls related to tourism infrastructure, including hotel fires, beach rescues, and transportation incidents. By investing in specialized training and international partnerships, local authorities aim to reduce response times and improve outcomes for both residents and tourists.

Participants will also engage in practical simulations, including controlled fire drills, evacuation coordination, and inter-agency communication exercises. The collaboration with Panama’s fire service brings a wealth of experience from Central America’s own tourism-heavy coastal zones, where emergency teams have adapted to frequent hurricanes, flooding, and large-scale resort evacuations.
