PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic — Frontier Airlines officially inaugurated its new route connecting Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, with San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Thursday, marking a strategic move to enhance air connectivity between the neighboring Caribbean islands. The launch of this route is expected to stimulate tourism, bolster commercial ties, and offer travelers a cost-effective option for regional travel.

The new service will initially operate two weekly direct flights between Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan. The initiative represents a notable step in deepening the relationship between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, both culturally and economically.

“This new route strengthens ties between our two islands and underscores Frontier’s commitment to supporting tourism and local economic development,” said Willianette Robles, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. “The additional 4,464 available seats that this service will introduce represent not only an increase in flight options but also a positive economic impact on our local communities.”

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company has been actively pursuing strategies to diversify and expand inbound and outbound travel options. Frontier’s low-cost model is seen as a key enabler of greater mobility, especially for those traveling between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for tourism, family visits, and business.

Josh Flyr, Vice President of Route Design and Operations at Frontier Airlines, highlighted the carrier’s mission to make air travel more accessible throughout the Caribbean. “We’re proud to expand our presence in the region with an affordable and efficient travel option for Dominicans heading to Puerto Rico,” Flyr said. “This route is more than just a new destination—it’s an investment in the people and economies of both nations.”

Frontier has steadily grown its footprint across Latin America and the Caribbean in recent years, focusing on affordable pricing and direct connections to underserved markets. The new Puerto Plata–San Juan route reflects the airline’s broader goal of enhancing regional connectivity while supporting tourism-driven economies.

The launch also garnered praise from Jorge Hernández, President of Aerostar Puerto Rico, the operator of San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. He emphasized the strategic significance of the new route and its potential to foster sustained economic growth.

“This direct connection is a valuable addition to our regional network and a promising development for tourism and commerce between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic,” Hernández said. “At Aerostar, we remain committed to supporting air service expansions that enhance San Juan’s accessibility and connectivity across the Caribbean and the Americas.”

The new flights are expected to not only make travel more convenient but also open doors for increased bilateral engagement in tourism and trade. Both Puerto Plata and San Juan are major tourism hubs in their respective countries, attracting millions of visitors each year. The direct link between the two cities is poised to create new travel itineraries and encourage extended stays by offering more seamless transit options.

With this launch, Frontier Airlines reinforces its role as a key player in regional aviation, providing travelers with affordable alternatives and contributing to the long-term growth of tourism and economic activity throughout the Caribbean.
