SANTO DOMINGO — Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons arrived in the Dominican Republic on Saturday, marking the commencement of a high-level official visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations.
Upon landing in Punta Cana, President Geerlings-Simons was received with full military honors by senior Dominican diplomats and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visiting delegation includes Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva and Minister of Transport, Communications, and Tourism Raymond Landveld.
The core of the diplomatic mission begins Monday at the National Palace, where Geerlings-Simons is scheduled to hold a private bilateral meeting with Dominican President Luis Abinader. According to official agendas, the leaders will oversee delegation-level talks, sign several cooperation agreements, and issue a joint declaration. The Surinamese head of state will also lay a wreath at the Altar of the Fatherland, accompanied by Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez.
On Tuesday, the President will transition to the legislative branch, meeting with congressional leadership before addressing a joint session of the Dominican Congress.
The state visit underscores a period of accelerating cooperation between the two nations. Recent diplomatic efforts have focused on expanding trade, sustainable energy development, and joint initiatives across the hydrocarbons, agriculture, and aviation sectors.
