Avianca to Inject US3 Million for Expansion and Introduction of New Routes

Bogotá.- Reiterating its commitment to the connectivity of Colombia, Ecuador and Central America, after 104 years of operation, and with a historic investment of US$473 million, avianca announces the arrival of 16 additional aircraft to the more than 120 aircraft that are currently part of its fleet. These aircraft will gradually begin operation between October and December.

Of the total of 16 aircraft, 14 will serve the Colombian market to offer 4,249 additional flights and 767,490 additional seats in this market.

  • For 104 years closer to the regions:

Avianca reported that the increase in capacity will allow it to strengthen and return connectivity to cities and regions that lost it due to the crisis, in addition to providing more and better connectivity opportunities to other destinations inside and outside of Colombia.

Cities highly impacted in terms of air connectivity such as San Andrés, Villavicencio, Riohacha and Leticia will now have more opportunities.

  • To San Andrés, from Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, Avianca will increase from 30 to 53 additional flights per week, which means 75% more connectivity for the island.
  • The company will go from operating one daily flight to two flights a day between Bogotá and Villavicencio for a total of 14 weekly flights.
  • In Riohacha, Avianca will increase from 20 to 28 weekly flights that will connect with Bogotá.
  • Leticia will go from 10 operations to 18 per week to connect with the center of the country.
  • In Ipiales, Avianca will go from 4 weekly flights to 1 daily, for an offer of 7 weekly flights.
  • Pasto will go from 25 weekly flights to 42, to continue connecting the south of the country.

In total, there will be about 20 destinations within Colombia and another 10 international destinations that will benefit from more flights to connect and more seats for everyone ahead of the end-of-year season:

  • National destinations: Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla, Pereira, Santa Marta, Cúcuta, Bucaramanga, Monterrey, Pastizal, Valledupar, Armenia, Riohacha, Leticia, Barrancabermeja, Villavicencio, Ibagué and Ipiales.
  • International destinations: Boston, Curacao, Fort Lauderdale, Guatemala City, Guayaquil, Orlando, Panama City, Punta Cana, San Salvador and San Juan.

“Colombia is a country that, due to its geography, highly depends on air connectivity and that is why we have been present for more than 104 years, 80% of our operation is here and more than 8,500 people are part of our team in Colombia. Our flag has been and always will be to be part of the solution: first we did it by guaranteeing that users could fulfill their travel plans after the crisis, and thus stabilize the sector; and now, we double our commitment and add more people to our operation, more capacity with more planes, more chairs and more connectivity to recover and strengthen Colombia. “Here we are and here we continue,” said Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of Avianca.

  • More planes mean more jobs:

This historic increase in capacity will also translate into a commitment to employability in the airline industry. Thus, Avianca will generate employment for 1,200 direct people and 600 indirect people. Of the grand total, around 800 vacancies are being offered in this country, generating new employment opportunities for specialized talent.
