Tourism Minister: Punta Cana Growth Challenges Urban Planning
The Dominican Republic’s Tourism Minister David Collado has acknowledged that Punta Cana growth has outpaced urban planning efforts, creating a complex scenario for authorities managing development in the region.

Speaking on the issue, Collado admitted that Bávaro-Punta Cana’s rapid expansion has created a challenging environment where urban development must now balance tourism demands with sustainability goals. He noted that while the area has seen significant economic gains, this growth has also strained infrastructure, housing, and environmental resources.
Authorities are now working to establish clearer urban development guidelines to manage the region’s expansion. Collado emphasized that future planning must consider environmental impact, transportation logistics, and community needs to avoid further strain on local services.
This admission comes amid rising concerns from residents and officials about unregulated construction and infrastructure gaps in the area. The Ministry of Tourism is coordinating with municipal governments and other agencies to address these issues and ensure that Punta Cana-Bávaro continues to grow responsibly.
