The Government Mandates Closure of Borders and Imposes Visa Suspension for Haitians

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government has announced a series of measures to address the situation on the border with Haiti. These actions aim to protect sovereignty and ensure national security. The decisions were made during a meeting of the National Security Council led by President Luis Abinader.

The measures include the closure of the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Visas for Haitian citizens will be suspended until further notice. The border through Dajabón will remain completely closed. If the conflict continues beyond a specific deadline, the border will be closed for all land, sea, and air trade.

Additionally, the government will reopen the Customs Intake of the Dajabón River to ensure a water supply for Dominican producers. Construction will also begin on the Don Miguel dam project as a long-term solution. The estimated construction time for the dam is approximately 30 months.

The Dominican government also requests a bilateral meeting of the binational water table to find a definitive solution to the current issues on the border.

Through these measures, the government highlights its commitment to defending national sovereignty and ensuring national security in response to the border situation with Haiti.
