The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) has announced the postponement of the Tenth Summit of the Americas, which had been slated to take place this year in Punta Cana. The decision follows unforeseen regional developments and the significant effects of recent climate events that severely impacted several Caribbean nations.
According to the official statement, the move was agreed upon in coordination with the United States—principal sponsor of the forum—alongside allied governments and international institutions, including the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
MIREX emphasized that all investments made to date will carry over to next year, including planned hemispheric meetings to be hosted in the Dominican Republic. While the Tenth Summit of the Americas is now being rescheduled for 2026, the exact date has yet to be determined. The Dominican government noted that the new timeline aims to broaden participation and include newly elected governments across the hemisphere.
The Dominican Republic was selected as host during the 2022 Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, a decision that was later approved by acclamation in Lima, Peru. Since then, national authorities have been actively coordinating logistics and international engagement to ensure a successful gathering in Punta Cana.
