Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) has set a new operational record after handling 896 flights in just seven days, the highest weekly figure since its inauguration. The milestone further consolidates PUJ as the most active and influential air terminal in the Dominican Republic, and one of the main gateways for tourism in the entire Caribbean.
The new high mark represents 125 more flights than in the same week of 2024, when the airport managed 771 operations, confirming a solid, sustained increase in air traffic. According to airport sources, the growth is closely linked to Punta Cana’s continued rise as the leading tourist hub in the region, supported by an ongoing hotel construction boom and a more diverse tourism offering that now goes beyond the traditional sun-and-beach model.
One of the key drivers behind this uptick has been the development of emerging destinations like Miches, on the northeastern coast. Over 2,000 new hotel rooms have come online there this year alone, prompting airlines to add more frequencies and open new routes to serve both established and up‑and‑coming resorts along the eastern corridor.
Airport representatives explain that this expansion in routes and frequencies is improving connectivity, shortening layovers and reducing total travel times for visitors arriving from North America, Europe and Latin America. The combination of more direct flights, better synchronized connections and modernized infrastructure reinforces Punta Cana International Airport’s role as a regional benchmark for operational efficiency, connectivity and passenger experience.
With this latest record of 896 flights in a single week, PUJ not only showcases the strength of Dominican tourism, but also sends a clear signal about the long-term confidence of airlines, investors and hotel brands in the Punta Cana–Miches corridor as one of the most dynamic tourism engines in the Caribbean.
