Baní, Dominican Republic — Vice President Raquel Peña announced on Monday the allocation of RD$64 million in zero-interest loans for mango producers in Baní, as part of a broader government initiative to strengthen the agricultural sector and support rural development. The financial support will be channeled through Banco Agrícola, alongside the renegotiation of a RD$3 million debt to further ease burdens on local farmers.
The announcement was made during a meeting with producers at the 2025 Expo Mango Fair held in Baní’s Central Park. Peña was accompanied by Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz, who reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable growth in the southern region’s agricultural economy. “The most important thing here is you, the producers,” Peña told attendees. “We’re here on behalf of President Abinader to listen and ensure you receive the support you deserve.”
In addition to the new financing initiative, Peña highlighted efforts to secure international markets for surplus mango production. The move comes as part of a national strategy to boost agri-exports and ensure long-term viability for local fruit growers.
Minister Cruz also revealed plans to launch a pilot project for grape cultivation in Baní, noting the region’s suitability for the crop. A total of 40 selected producers will receive financing from Banco Agrícola to begin test plantations.
Later in the day, Vice President Peña traveled to San Cristóbal, where she handed over 40 fully furnished homes to families affected by past hurricanes—including Georges, Olga, and Noel—dating back as far as 1998. The new homes are part of a housing initiative led by the Directorate of Strategic Special Projects of the Presidency (Propeep).
Each of the newly delivered houses measures 44 square meters and includes a terrace, living room, kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. The handover took place at the new Community Housing Center in Cañada Honda.
Peña also visited Bishop Faustino Burgos during her tour of Baní, with all engagements coordinated under directives from President Luis Abinader, underscoring the administration’s ongoing outreach to vulnerable communities and key economic sectors across the country.
